FAQ

What is Coaching?

Coaching is designed to take you from where you are today to where you want to be. A coach helps you to set specific goals, explore possibilities, remove obstacles and reach your desired outcome. Coaching can help you expand your awareness of what is possible and move you into the action needed to reach your desired objectives. Through conversation and support, a coach will act as a sounding board, educator, motivator and accountability partner to support you in making lasting change in your life.

What happens in a coaching session?

We will meet in person, via video conferencing or by phone.  During the Intake Session we will focus on learning as much as we can about you: what your strengths are, where you have challenges, what you would like to achieve from coaching and how we might work together. In our subsequent sessions, we will work toward your personal goals. We will focus on what you want to change, what is getting in your way, and how we can use your strengths to develop strategies and actions for success.  Our goal is to expand your awareness of yourself and to see what is possible. Clients often leave the session with some work to be accomplished prior to our next session. This work can be an assignment or new routine, system or structure to implement.  This work is necessary to move you toward the change you want in your life.

How is youth coaching different from adult coaching?

When we coach an adult, the adult sets the goals for our work together and we meet regularly to achieve their desired outcome.

When coaching youth under the age of 18, the parents set the goals for the coaching relationship with the child’s input. Often, we  work with both the youth and one (or both) of the parents to achieve the desired objectives. Sometimes a parent joins the youth in their sessions. Other times, we meet with the parent at the end of our session or on an agreed upon interval (i.e. monthly or bi-weekly).  The parent and coach co-create the structure based on what works best for child’s age, temperament and desired outcomes.  The parents support the child between sessions in experimenting with new ways of being, thinking and doing and are an integral part of the success team.

When we coach young adults being supported by a parent (age 18 - 25), we meet with the young adult separate from the parents and discuss in advance with the parents and the young adult their agreement concerning confidentiality.

How does coaching differ from therapy?

Therapy often focuses on healing pain, dysfunction and relationship conflict arising from situations in the past.  The focus is on resolving these past difficulties to improve overall psychological functioning in the present.  Coaching is focused on identifying what the client wants in the here and now and how to achieve those goals. Coaching is future focused.  In coaching, we explore “who” the client is (their strengths, processing styles, behavior preferences, needs, values and unique brain wiring), identify what is getting in the way of achieving their goals and create new actions to move the client toward their desired outcome. This process involves experimenting with new ways of thinking, being and doing; knowing that not all solutions will work for all people and that some solutions will only work for a period of time before needing to be refreshed.

How long do clients typically work with a coach?

The duration of coaching depends on the client’s needs and goals. Because change takes time, it is recommended a client commit to an initial three to six months of coaching. Our goal is to see you reach your goals as quickly as possible and create a lasting foundation for continued success. The number of coaching sessions and the session interval (weekly, biweekly, etc)  will be established at the time of the Intake Session.

For adults, typically an 8-12 session commitment to start is recommended. At that time, the coaching relationship can be re-evaluated for extension or conclusion.

For many youth or young adults dealing with executive function or social challenges it is more common for us to recommend 12 sessions of weekly coaching to start. Some youth extend that commitment by 4-8 sessions. Occasionally, students stay with us for the duration of a school year or longer.

Does insurance cover coaching services?
