EXECUTIVE FUNCTION / ADHD COACHING
Executive functions are a set of mental skills that help us get things done. These skills are controlled by an area of the brain called the prefrontal cortex. This means executive function challenges are neuro-biological in nature; they are part of our brain wiring.
Executive functions help us:
- Manage time
- Notice the passage of time
- Pay attention
- Shift focus
- Start tasks
- Sustain attention until a task is complete
- Plan and organize
- Remember details
- Be flexible
- Avoid saying or doing the wrong things
- Do things based on experience
Some conditions such as ADHD, anxiety, learning disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorder are associated with weak executive functioning. However, the areas and degree of executive functioning weakness differ from person to person.
When a person has areas of executive function weakness, behavior is less controlled. This may affect someone’s ability to:
- Perform at work or at school
- Keep track of items
- Do things independently
- Organize and prioritize
- Manage emotions
- Control impulses
- Maintain relationships
Executive function coaching helps clients learn about their own unique brain wiring. This includes: identifying which executive functions are strong and which are weak, how the client learns and processes information, where a client’s strength, passion and interests lie, and how the client activates his brain to reach his goals .
Executive function coaching also provides individuals with tools, strategies, routines and structure to build and accommodate weak executive functions in areas such as organizing, planning, and prioritizing, as well as managing and regulating impulses and emotions.
